Abstract

Institutional Governance in the Relationship between Artificial Intelligence Applications and Perceived Financial Sustainability: A Correlational Study from the Perspective of Workers in Saudi Nonprofit Associations
Abstract
This study examines the relationship between artificial intelligence (AI) applications and perceived financial sustainability among workers in Saudi nonprofit associations, and estimates an indirect pathway through institutional governance, with digital readiness as an antecedent to AI applications. A cross-sectional correlational design was used; data from a 40-item questionnaire completed by a purposive sample of 428 participants were analysed with PLS-SEM. In the baseline model, digital readiness was associated with AI applications (β = 0.883), AI applications with governance (β = 0.742) and perceived financial sustainability (β = 0.379), and governance with perceived financial sustainability (β = 0.512), all at p < 0.001; the indirect effect was 0.380. In an additional structural model controlling for association size, annual budget, and age, the indirect effect remained significant in the baseline specification (β = 0.235, BCa 95% CI [0.163, 0.317]), but fell and became nonsignificant when a direct path from digital readiness to governance was added (β = 0.034, CI [−0.017, 0.093]). In the earlier full-measure alternative model, this indirect effect was 0.044 and nonsignificant. After seven overlapping items were removed, discriminant validity was supported (HTMT = 0.850), and the indirect effect in the alternative model was small but significant (β = 0.101). These cross-sectional, single-source perceptual results indicate associations rather than causal mechanisms or a stable mediation process; interpretation is also limited by the small share of finance officers in the sample.
Keywords: artificial intelligence; institutional governance; perceived financial sustainability; digital readiness; nonprofit associations; PLS-SEM; Saudi Arabia.
